OLD TOWN CAMARILLO
TWO PARKS:
DIZDAR PARK EXPANSION
&
FARMERS MARKET, FORMER COURTHOUSE
PROPERTY RE-USE

CLIENT: CITY OF CAMARILLO

Both of these community-participatory programming, planning, and design projects were driven by opportunities that arose from moribund buildings - In the case of Dizdar Park, a dis-used fire station and chamber of commerce building; and, in the case of the Farmers Market property, an abandoned county courthouse.

Through a series of community workshops, expanded program elements for Dizdar Park included a new amphitheater, a small performance/gathering garden, an expanded tot lot, a ceremonial entry to Old Town, and public art dedicated to the long history of the site and its buildings in the city.

Adding to the existing needs of the Farmers Market property, (weekend market, weekday and week-long parking), were community preferences for a mid-Old Town retreat park and walking garden, where residents might sit or stroll after a lunch, dinner, or shopping visit in the city.

Like Dizdar Park, the project was programmed, planning, and designed through a community workshop process, which led to a preference - leveraging the site's existing terracing - to an elevated view park perched over the market. A central terraced water feature will colorfully mark the park's presence to Old Town pedestrians and traffic.
